MUDLAB designed this addition to the Marfa Volunteer Fire department in order for them to expand their storage capabilities and store more trucks indoors out of the freezing winter and relentless summers. The design includes new automatic doors, a new accessible bathroom as well as a room dedicated to laundering the firefighters gear, a feat that was previously impossible due to space limitations. The new building is fully heated and has doubled the vehicle capacity of the department, a new exit lane has been established through the building so any one vehicle can respond when needed. The new addition is an insulated metal building with skylights and 3/4” painted plywood for walls, the walls are sturdy and will allow for many variations of mounting and customization. A 12’ cantilever projects off the back of the building, protecting outdoor equipment from the sun, this area will be used to wash trucks and do outdoor training exercises.
